"Tutorials for the Shining 3D FreeScan Combo" (7 videos), recorded on the real scanner that Kirin Scan Combo is modelled on. Watch each part on YouTube, then practise the same step here.

Phone scan · photos or video → 3D model → STL

        Step 1 of 4

Real scanning with any phone camera by photogrammetry: take 40–80 photos or a video of up to 60 s, check them here, rebuild the 3D model in free software, then import the result to scan it in the simulator or save it as STL. Expect about 0.5–2 mm accuracy, compared with 0.02 mm for the laser scanner.

        Capture

        • Matte part with some texture. Spray shiny parts, or put newspaper under the part.
        • Soft, even light. No flash, no hard shadows.
        • Move the phone, not the part. Go round 2–3 times: low, middle, high.
        • One photo every 10–15°, each overlapping the last by 60–80%.
        • Part fills about 60% of the frame and is sharp.
        • Put a ruler beside it, or measure the longest side.
        • Video: walk slowly and steadily, 60 s at most.
        • iPhone: Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible (JPEG).

        Rebuild in free software

Saves the checked photos (or video frames) with a README. In the online viewer, the STL from step 4 is saved inside a .zip.

        Meshroom in 5 steps
        1. Unzip the photo set and drag the photos into Meshroom's Images pane.
        2. Save the project, then press Start. It can take 20–60 minutes.
        3. When it finishes, right-click the Texturing (or Meshing) node › Open Folder.
        4. Take the .obj file (Texturing) or .ply/.obj (Meshing).
        5. Import it in step 4. No NVIDIA card? Use Meshroom's draft (photogrammetry draft) pipeline or RealityScan.

        About this simulation

The software above copies the screens of the real scanning software (FreeScan 2.2, the software of the Shining 3D FreeScan Combo that Kirin Scan Combo is modelled on), with the KIRIN name and logo: Home, Calibration (4 steps × 9 heights), Scan Mode, Scan (Scan Global Markers, Global Markers Optimization, Scan Mesh), Cutting Plane, Data editing, Project List, Alignment, Mesh Processing, Mesh Editing, Export and Measurement.

        What is simulated, and how
        • The scanner is a ray-cast laser: each frame projects 26 (Combo+ 50) cross lines, 7 parallel lines or 1 line; points are kept only inside the working distance, at angles up to 75° (82° with Deep Hole Optimization) and where the second camera can also see the point.
        • Tracking needs at least 4 markers in view (3 known global markers after optimization) and the right Marker Size. IR mode tracks on geometric features.
        • Exposure: black parts need a high exposure, the white table a low one; wrong exposure returns fewer points.
        • Alignment is checked against the real part position: marker alignment fails when the part was moved on the plate; manual alignment needs 3 matching point pairs.
        • The mesh covers the part surface where scan points exist; unscanned areas become holes whose perimeter decides Auto Hole Filling. Plate or cube data left in the scan becomes loose surfaces.
        • Datasheet values: accuracy 0.02 mm, volumetric accuracy 0.02 + 0.033 mm/m, 1.86 M pts/s (Combo), 3.6 M pts/s (Combo+), 620 g.
